Nigeria Introduces Special Police Unit to Strengthen Bank Security

Nigeria’s Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has introduced a new policing framework aimed at reinforcing security across the country’s banking sector.

The initiative will see the deployment of specially trained Supernumerary (SPY) Police officers to safeguard banks and other critical financial infrastructure nationwide.

IGP announced the reform during a high-level meeting in Lagos with the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) and the Body of Banks’ Chief Executive Officers.

The IGP further explained that the long-standing model of deploying regular police personnel for routine cash-in-transit operations would be progressively restructured. Under the new framework, priority will be placed on the recruitment, professional training, and deployment of SPY Police officers to deliver specialized security support to banks and other financial institutions.
