As the FIFA World Cup captivates millions of fans worldwide, cybersecurity experts are warning that many websites offering free live streams of matches are actually traps designed to spread scams and malware.
According to cybersecurity company Malwarebytes, dozens of websites promising every World Cup match “live and in HD for free” are using the tournament’s popularity to lure unsuspecting fans into clicking on malicious links.
The sites often appear legitimate, featuring video players, “Live Stream Available” notifications, server options, match schedules, and prominent “Watch Live” buttons. However, behind the scenes, these pages are engineered to bombard visitors with pop-up advertisements, hidden redirects, and fraudulent downloads.
Instead of watching football, users may be redirected to phishing websites, fake software updates, bogus giveaways, or malware-infected downloads that can compromise their devices and steal sensitive information.
Cybercriminals have long exploited major sporting events to target eager fans looking for free access to premium content. Security researchers warn that a single click on these fake streaming platforms can expose users to financial fraud, identity theft, and malware infections.
Malwarebytes advises football fans to avoid unofficial streaming websites and use only legitimate broadcasters and licensed streaming services. Users are also encouraged to keep their devices updated, avoid downloading unknown applications, and immediately close websites that trigger repeated pop-ups or redirects.
