A Latvian national accused of helping ransomware gangs extort millions of dollars from victims worldwide has been sentenced to 8.5 years in a U.S. federal prison.
According to U.S. prosecutors in Ohio, Deniss Zolotarjovs received a 102-month prison sentence for serving as a negotiator for several notorious cybercriminal operations, including Karakurt, TommyLeaks, and SchoolBoys ransomware groups.
Authorities said Zolotarjovs played a central role in communicating with victims, pressuring organizations into paying large sums of money after sensitive data had been stolen. Prosecutors revealed that some of the compromised information included children’s health records, making the attacks particularly damaging.
Investigators say the ransomware operations targeted businesses, schools, healthcare providers, and other institutions across multiple countries, contributing to tens of millions of dollars in extortion-related losses.
Rather than deploying the ransomware himself, Zolotarjovs allegedly specialized in negotiating ransom demands and threatening victims with public data leaks if payments were not made. Officials say this role has become increasingly common within modern cybercrime networks, where criminals divide responsibilities among hackers, negotiators, and money launderers.
U.S. authorities described the sentencing as part of ongoing international efforts to dismantle ransomware ecosystems and hold every member of cyber extortion operations accountable.
Cybersecurity experts warn that ransomware groups continue to evolve, increasingly relying on data theft and psychological pressure tactics rather than encryption alone. The case also highlights growing concerns over attacks involving sensitive medical and educational records.
Law enforcement agencies have urged organizations to strengthen cybersecurity defenses, regularly back up critical data, and report ransomware incidents promptly to authorities.
