A federal jury in the United States has convicted 34-year-old Sohaib Akhter of Alexandria, Virginia, for his role in a major computer fraud and government data destruction scheme.
According to U.S. court records, Akhter and his twin brother, Muneeb Akhter, worked for a Washington, D.C.-based technology company that provided software services to more than 45 federal government agencies. The company also hosted government client data on servers located in Ashburn, Virginia.
Prosecutors said the brothers were involved in illegally accessing protected computer systems, stealing login credentials, and destroying sensitive government data. Authorities described the incident as a serious cyberattack affecting multiple federal agencies.
Sohaib Akhter was also convicted on charges related to password trafficking and illegal firearm possession.
The case highlights growing concerns over insider threats and cybercrime targeting government systems in the United States.
