A prominent Iranian hacker who had been on the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Most Wanted list was reportedly killed following a strike linked to Israeli operations inside Iran.
According to reports by Iran International, Mohammad Mehdi Farhadi Ramin died in the city of Hamadan, with his funeral reportedly held on March 9. Farhadi had been wanted by U.S. authorities since 2020 over allegations of conducting malicious cyber activities targeting American institutions.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation accused Farhadi of being involved in cyber intrusions dating back to at least 2013. Investigators alleged that he and his associates carried out coordinated hacking campaigns against companies, universities, U.S. defense contractors, and nonprofit organizations in an effort to obtain sensitive information.
U.S. authorities further claimed that Farhadi participated in identity-theft operations involving American citizens. The stolen data reportedly included credit card details and Social Security numbers, which investigators say were used to finance illicit activities. Some of the compromised information was also allegedly sold on underground cybercrime marketplaces.
Security analysts say the case highlights the growing overlap between state-linked cyber operations, financially motivated cybercrime, and geopolitical conflict. Farhadi’s alleged activities were considered part of a broader campaign targeting Western institutions for both intelligence gathering and financial gain.
While details surrounding the strike remain limited, the reported death of Farhadi marks a significant development in international efforts to curb high-profile cybercriminal operations linked to Iran.
