Toronto Police Arrest Suspects in First-of-Its-Kind SMS Blaster Cybercrime Case

The Toronto Police Service has announced multiple arrests in what authorities describe as a groundbreaking cybercrime investigation involving the use of a mobile “SMS blaster.”

The operation uncovered a sophisticated device designed to mimic a legitimate cellular tower. This technology enabled suspects to broadcast fraudulent text messages directly to nearby mobile phones, making them appear as though they originated from trusted institutions such as banks and service providers.

According to police, the device was first detected in downtown Toronto in November 2025. Investigators later tracked its movement across the Greater Toronto Area over several months. During this period, tens of thousands of mobile devices unknowingly connected to the rogue system, resulting in more than 13 million network disruptions.

Authorities warned that these disruptions had serious implications, including the temporary blockage of access to legitimate cellular networks and critical emergency services such as 911.

On March 31, police executed search warrants at residences in Markham and Hamilton, where they seized multiple electronic devices and other key evidence. Two suspects were arrested at the scene, while a third later turned themselves in to authorities.

The three individuals now face dozens of charges, including fraud and mischief-related offences.

Detective Sergeant Lindsay Riddell stated that investigators are confident the primary suspects have been apprehended, significantly reducing any immediate threat to the city. However, she emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to identify additional victims.

Police also highlighted the widespread nature of SMS-based scams and confirmed ongoing collaboration with organizations to determine the full extent of those affected.

Members of the public are being urged to remain vigilant by avoiding suspicious links and refraining from sharing personal or login information through unsolicited text messages.
